Kane’s double seals historic milestone in Bayern’s victory over Bremen

Harry Kane struck twice as Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 4-1 on Friday, becoming the fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for a club in Europe’s top five leagues.

The England captain converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time before adding a second from close range in the 65th minute.

His brace carried him to the century mark in just 104 games, eclipsing the record of 105 matches set by Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid in 2011 and later matched by Erling Haaland at Manchester City.

Bayern had taken the lead through Luis Diaz, who deflected in Jonathan Tah’s flick from a corner midway through the first half. Kane’s strikes either side of the break gave the hosts full control before Konrad Laimer rounded off the win with a late fourth.

The result extended Bayern’s unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season and reinforced their position at the top of the table under new manager Vincent Kompany. The win also underlined Kane’s role as the club’s talisman since arriving in Germany in 2023.

Kane has been rewriting records since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in a £100m move. Last weekend, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim, becoming the fastest player to reach 70 Bundesliga goals, doing so in just 67 matches.

The 32-year-old has also set new benchmarks for the competition’s history. He holds the record for the most goals in 50 Bundesliga games (54) and was the quickest to reach 50 goals, needing just 43 appearances.

Friday’s double brought another milestone as Kane became the first player in Bundesliga history to score with each of his first 18 penalties. He has also now converted 18 consecutive spot-kicks since moving to Germany.

Kane is the only player to finish as top scorer in his first two Bundesliga seasons and the first to record 25 or more goals in each of those campaigns. His current form suggests another prolific year, with 15 goals in eight appearances across all competitions already this season.

The England captain’s consistency has made him a standout among his compatriots abroad. He is the highest-scoring Englishman in Champions League history with 42 goals, and in Germany, he has found the net against every Bundesliga opponent he has faced. Only Miroslav Klose has scored against more different sides.

Kompany praised Kane’s work rate, stressing that his influence extends beyond goals. “It is more about his work off the ball,” the Bayern boss said.

“Watch him move, press, and help the team. He spends energy to create chances and rewards. Behind the quality and talent, there is a lot of hard work.”
