‘Kante was United’s top transfer target this summer’

Chelsea star, N’Golo Kante was top of Manchester United’s summer transfer wishlist, according to Axel Witsel’s agent.

Jose Mourinho has struggled to secure new faces during pre-season, with Fred’s arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk the only name expected to play a key part in the first-team squad this season.

With Michael Carrick retiring from playing, Marouane Fellaini’s contract expiring before signing fresh terms and ongoing speculation over Paul Pogba’s future, United are claimed to have ear-marked Kante for a midfield role for the upcoming season.

“I know from a very good source that Mourinho said he wanted Witsel, but not in the first place,” the Belgian agent Paul Stefani told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“N’Golo Kante topped his list.

“Eventually Axel said: ‘Do me a favour and finish it as quickly as possible because I really want to go to Dortmund’.”

Standard Sport understands Chelsea are aiming to make Kante the highest-paid player in their history with a five-year £290,000-a-week new contract after Paris Saint-Germain showed interest.

Meanwhile, United remain interested in Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld ahead of Thursday’s 5pm transfer deadline.
