Kanu’s saddest day: Property burgled, laurels lost

Two-time African Footballer Of The Year title winner, Nwankwo Kanu was on Tuesday left in tears as he saw one of estate, The Hadley Apartments being forcefully taken ‘on court order’ in favour of a reputable bank.

According to the former Super Eagles captain, in the process he lost medals, titles and honours he has accummulated over the years due to the action taken on the property situated along Waziri Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“It was a rude shock to me,” Kanu, was quoted as saying by TheCable.

“I almost couldn’t recognise the hotel as belonging to me anymore. This is the saddest day of my life as I cannot understand why this happen to me when the matter has yet to be settled in court.

“All the medals I have earned, in addition to the Olympic torch that I cherished are all gone, and I don’t even know who to ask for all these prized assets.”

Kanu’s four star hotel has been a subject of litigation for some years, over an alleged default in transaction between it and Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank), leading to series of litigation that is still pending at the federal high court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The last hearing on the matter came up in November 2018 after which the case was adjourned till January 31.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on Tuesday expressed concern.

An official statement from the NFF quotes the body’s President, Amaju Pinnick as say: “Our superstar and former captain is in intense pain at this period, and we empathise with him. This is tragedy. Losing precious possessions like medals, trophies and plaques can be heartbreaking.

“We respectfully call on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to work hard at unravelling the perpetrators of these nefarious act. Kanu worked very hard from a humble beginning to accumulate whatever he has today and to earn those precious valuables,” NFF President said in Lagos.
