The Kebbi state government under its numerous sporting programmes is determined to reduce juvenile delinquency and moral decadence, youth restiveness, drug addiction and political thuggery among its teeming youths across the state, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Nura Bala Fingiller has said.
Fingiller who disclosed this while briefing journalists under the eight months of his assumption of office as commissioner in charge of the ministry under Governor Nasir Idris is posed to encourage and motivate to discover and develop their talents.
He expressed that the government of Governor Nasir Idris is initiating programmes of intervention in youth and Sports development to discover talents that will engage them in more profitable ventures such as sporting activities in the state.
According to him, associations like volleyball, basketball, handball, and badminton among others have recorded a number of achievements through the intervention of the present administration in the state with full commitment and financial support.
Among the successes recorded by the ministry within the month under review as he stated are the nomination of state indigenes into the national volleyball referees, qualification of the state female basketball team into the Zenith Women Basketball, and sponsoring of the handball team to various competitions.
Other successes recorded include the zonal badminton championship in Kaduna where the silver medal was won at a single event, National Badminton competition, winning a silver medal at a single event and the Zone 6 Kaduna Badminton Championship where the state won a gold medal and silver medal at both single and double events.
“Beach Soccer is another great event that has shot the state into the world map due to its exploit in that game, the state government has sponsored the state team to the international championship in Lagos where it won the best team award,” he said.
In Football, the Commissioner said, “Kebbi State Football Association has recorded unprecedented achievements, which include the formation of new management for Kebbi United FC”, adding that the state currently has 11 teams playing at the National Professional League, division 11 and 111 respectively.
