The Lagos State government said on Friday that it has earmarked a sum of N12.6billion for sports facilities and development this financial year.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports and chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Deji Tinubu, said this at a ministerial press conference in Lagos
Tinubu said the government was committing N9.6billion on sports facilities this year in order to boost sports in the state, while N3billion was earmarked for the development of sports in a bid to ensure that Lagos rank top in the country.
On the National Stadium, Lagos, Tinubu said the state government was willing to acquire the stadium and had bid for it.
He, however, refused to disclose how much the government was bidding for the stadium, saying, “There is no money for the bidding.”
Tinubu, while lamenting the dilapidated nature of the stadium, also declined to comment on the controversy surrounding the planned takeover of the stadium by the state government.
He maintained that government was interested in acquiring the stadium and that when given the nod by the Federal Government, it would develop the facility and make it the toast and the best stadium in the country where Nigerians would want to see the Super Eagles play their matches.
Tinubu stated that the Lagos State Sports Commission Bill passed into law by the state House of Assembly, would “allows us to be more professional, more specific, more dedicated, dynamic and able to keep up with current and evolving sporting trends.”
He said the Commission had the vision to engage more schools in organised sports and create a standardised school sports calendar as well as create a database for gifted secondary school athletes in basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, wrestling, table-tennis and taekwondo.
