The only Nigerian standing in the second leg (Futures 5) of the ongoing Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, Joseph Imeh Ubon on Wednesday crashed out of the International Tennis Federation-rated tournament.
Imeh, could not make it to the quarter-final as he lost to number four seed, Ilkel Cem of Turkey in the second round men’s singles game decided at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
The home boy could not match the firepower of the experienced Turkish opponent as he lost in straight set of 0-6, 3-6.
It will be recalled that Imeh who dismissed veteran Abdulmumuni Babalola 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to qualify for the main draws had on Tuesday, created a major upset when he stunned France star, Stephan Fransen 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Sabry Sherif also failed to make it to the quarter-final as he bowed to number eight seed, Mitjana Leny of France 4-6, 1-6. Tatlot Johan Sebastien France beat compatriot Setodji Thomas 6-4, 6-1, as number two seed, Egyptian Maamoun Karim-Moha defeated fellow African Meda Joel from Cote d’Ivoire 6-2, 6-7, while Krstin Pedja, number three seed Serbia outplayed Indian Sood Chandril 6-1, 6-2 in another men’s singles tie.
In the women’s singles, former champion and number five seed, Majeric Tadeja of Slovakia survived the scare from Zimbabwe’s Bhunu Valeria as the game ended in 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, while number two seed, Turkish Aksu Ayla defeated Tunisia’s Bechri Chiraz 6-0, 6-3.
