The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Honourable Lekan Fatodu, has commended the organisers of the annual Sportsville Special Recognition Awards saying such are what the nation needs to promote all-round sports development.
Fatodu made the statement when members of the award committee, led by Vanguard Newspaper Group Sports Editor, Tony Ubani, paid him a courtesy call to brief him on the preparations ahead of this year’s ceremony scheduled for Thursday, April 3rd, 2025 in Lagos.

“I am happy that you guys have deemed it fit to organise awards of this nature, which no doubt serves as encouragement to those supporting our sports development. That you have been doing this for the past four years consistently, even without sponsors, shows the calibre of brains behind it.
“The Lagos State Sports Commission will continue to encourage partners like Sportsville to develop sports in and around the state,” he said.
The DG also promised to grace the ceremony this year.
“I have heard so much about the ceremony and this time, I will be there to celebrate with you and the awardees,” he added.
The delegation had earlier briefed the DG on the rationale behind instituting the award ceremony five years ago and the need to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to reward and encourage those at the forefront of sports development in Nigeria.
Ubani, in his remarks, informed Fatodu that the Sportsville Award was conceptualised to be the most credible award in Nigeria.
“And that is why we take pains to get credible nominees as recipients every year. That no one has faulted our nominations since gives us immense joy,” Ubani said.
This year’s ceremony will be held under the chairmanship of Oseni Rufai, with the rave-making Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) President, Dr Uyi Akpata, nominated as the Sports Personality of the Year.
