LALIGA: Rudiger suffers racial abuse in Madrid’s 2-0 win over Cadiz

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger was subjected to racial abuse by fans after a Spanish league game against Cadiz on Saturday.

A video posted by Spanish media on Sunday showed Cadiz fans shouting insults at Rudiger, who is black, as he went to give his shirt away to a Madrid supporter in the stands.

Some objects were also thrown at him. Rudiger exchanged words with some of the fans before giving away his shirt and saluting other supporters. Two members of Madrid’s staff came to escort him away from the fans.

This incident follows a season marked by racism in Spanish soccer. Rudiger’s teammate Vinícius Júnior has been targeted in several matches this season, with the Brazilian forward having testified against a Mallorca fan accused of calling him a monkey during a match earlier this month.

The same fan was also accused of insulting Villarreal midfielder Samu Chukwueze in another league match.

The Spanish league has filed formal complaints against the insults aimed at Vinícius, some of which have been shelved, and has increased the number of monitors at Madrid matches to identify perpetrators.

Valladolid has recently suspended 12 season-ticket holders while investigating allegations of verbal abuse against Vinícius.

The first trial against a fan who racially abused a player in Spain is expected to begin this year after remarks by an Espanyol supporter against Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams a few years ago.
