Frank Lampard’s first match back in charge of Chelsea ended in disappointment as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux.
Despite missing the services of Mason Mount, the caretaker boss brought in Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling to boost the attacking options. However, their efforts were not enough to breach a well-drilled Wolves defense.
The game got off to a slow start, with battles being fought largely in midfield and on the flanks. Both teams lacked a dangerous focal point in their attacks, leading to a lack of clear-cut chances. However, in the 31st minute, Matheus Nunes scored a stunning goal that lit up an otherwise drab first half.
The former Sporting CP midfielder sent a wonderful strike whistling across Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the left corner after the ball bounced into his path near the right edge of the penalty area. It was a goal worthy of winning any game and proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Former Blue Diego Costa, caused problems for the visitors throughout the match, even though his old pace has gone.
He was eventually substituted after an hour, much to the relief of the Chelsea defenders. Meanwhile, Wolves’ Cunha was providing most of the threat, with Kepa making a solid stop before being grateful to see a fierce strike clear the bar.

Chelsea’s Reece James had a chance to level the score with a free-kick just before the hour, but he fired horribly over the bar. Lampard’s side continued to plug away, but they lacked obvious purpose in attack, failing to add to their meagre four away wins in the league this season.
This defeat marks a huge blow to Chelsea’s hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. They are now one short of the 40-point mark after 30 rounds of games, with a crucial match against Real Madrid up next. Meanwhile, for Wolves, this was a massive result, easing their relegation concerns under Julen Lopetegui’s management.
Matheus Nunes’ stunning goal was the difference between the two sides, as Chelsea failed to find a suitable response. With a tough match against Real Madrid looming, Lampard will be hoping for a better showing from his team.
