Mauro Icardi
West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini has been named in Argentina’s 35-man preliminary squad for the World Cup.
Lanzini has three caps for La Albiceleste and has featured prominently in the setup since Jorge Sampaoli’s appointment a year ago.
In that time Mauro Icardi has largely been frozen out of the setup and indeed the Inter Milan striker has made only four appearances for Argentina since his debut in 2013. However the 25-year-old’s 28 goals in 34 matches this season have at least earned him a place on the shortlist.
Whether he can make Sampaoli’s final 23, which will be named in a week’s time, remains in some doubt amid fierce competition in the Argentine frontline. Paulo Dybala, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain are the stand-out names with Roma forward Diego Perotti and 20-year-old Lautaro Martinez rounding out the attacking options.
Everton centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori joins Lanzini among the Premier League representatives, as does Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Manchester United duo Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo.
