Liverpool end winless run with emphatic 6-1 victory over Leeds United

Liverpool secured an impressive 6-1 victory against Leeds United in their Premier League encounter on Monday.

Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah scored twice each, while Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also found the back of the net for the Reds. The win ended Liverpool’s five-game winless streak in all competitions, since their 5-0 win over Manchester United in early March.

Liverpool took control of the game with a double from Gakpo and Salah in the first half. The first goal came after Trent Alexander-Arnold played a one-two with Salah before assisting Gakpo to score in the 35th minute.

Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead with a rasping drive past Illan Meslier four minutes later. Although Luis Sinisterra pulled one back for Leeds at the start of the second half, there was no dramatic comeback for the home side.

Jota then scored two goals, one of them assisted by Curtis Jones before Salah scored his second goal of the night with a selfless pass from Gakpo. Jordan Henderson’s pass allowed Jota to find the same corner as Salah for Liverpool’s fifth goal. Darwin Nunez completed the rout by converting Alexander Arnold’s dinked ball.

Liverpool’s victory moved them to within six points of Europa League qualification. Leeds should have taken the lead early on when Rodrigo headed straight at Alisson from Jack Harrison’s free-kick. However, the home team struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities after Liverpool took the lead.

The win will provide a boost to Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have had a difficult season, with injuries to key players and poor performances.

Klopp’s side is still in the race for a top-four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League. Meanwhile, Leeds remains in danger of being relegated, sitting in 14th place, just six points above the relegation zone.
