Liverpool have secured the loan signing of Sam Kerr, with the Scotland international arriving from Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season.
After a successful two-year spell at Rangers, Kerr joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. However, she has faced challenges in establishing herself in Germany, struggling to earn consistent playing time.
Competing for a spot in midfield alongside top-tier talent such as England’s Georgia Stanway, Austria’s Sarah Zadrazil, Germany’s Linda Dallmann, and young prospect Alara Sehitler, Kerr has only started two league matches this season.
The 25-year-old midfielder will have the opportunity to gain more game time at Liverpool. Matt Beard’s squad had been in dire need of reinforcements after injuries severely impacted their performance in the first half of the Women’s Super League season. Kerr’s arrival adds quality and experience to a team that has gathered just nine points from their first 10 matches.
Kerr said upon the announcement of the loan, “I’m really excited for my time here. I spoke to Matt and obviously, the club before I came, and I love their ambitions and am really excited to get started. I feel like my career in the last few years has really changed a lot.
“Obviously, moving to Germany was a challenge in itself, being in that intense environment with world-class players has been really good for my development. With the national team, I’ve grown into the role which has been really good, and I’m hoping to bring my experience and the things I’ve learned over the last couple of years to Liverpool in this loan move.”
Liverpool had earlier attempted to sign Kerr before her move to Bayern Munich, with Beard revealing that they “nearly had a deal done.” Unsurprisingly, the Liverpool manager is thrilled to have secured her services, even on a temporary basis.
“We’re probably getting a more complete player now, a little bit older with experience of playing for one of the biggest European women’s football teams,” Beard said.
“Hopefully, we’ll use her international experience to help bolster the squad, and she can play in the holding role as well as in the ‘8,’ so it gives us a little bit of flexibility. She’s great on the ball and is aggressive, which is just what we needed, I think.”
Kerr, who will wear the No. 24 shirt at Liverpool, could make her debut on Sunday when the Reds travel to London to face West Ham in the FA Women’s Cup fourth round. Her first appearance in the Women’s Super League is set for January 17 when Liverpool take on high-flying Brighton at home.
