Luke Shaw commits to Manchester United with new four-year contract

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has extended his contract with the Red Devils until the end of the 2026-27 season.

The 27-year-old, who has been with the club for nine seasons, was set to be out of contract at the end of the upcoming season. However, the club triggered the extension in his previous deal in December, securing his future at Old Trafford for another five years.

Shaw has been an integral part of United’s squad this season, featuring in 36 of their 47 matches under manager Erik ten Hag.

The defender has played a key role in their successful campaign, helping them win the Europa League and two EFL Cups during his time at the club.

The England international has made 249 appearances for United since joining them from Southampton in June 2014 for a fee in the region of £30million. He has grown into one of the best defenders in the world and has added leadership to his outstanding abilities, according to United’s director of football, John Murtough.

Murtough said that Shaw is a “massively important player to the squad” and “understands the expectations for success, and the hard work, commitment and high standards required to achieve it.” He added that the club is looking forward to seeing Shaw in a United shirt for years to come.

Shaw expressed his delight at signing the new deal, saying that he is thrilled to extend his stay at the club. He has grown immensely since coming to Manchester, both as a person and as a player, and he knows what is needed to succeed at a club like United. He is looking forward to creating something special under the manager and his coaching staff and is determined to give everything to be a part of that.

In addition to Shaw, United is in advanced talks with David de Gea over fresh terms, while discussions are ongoing with Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot regarding new contracts.

United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday, which could be damaging in the race for the top four. However, they will look to bounce back when they face Brentford on Wednesday.
