The introduction of the Nigeria international as a second half substitute salvaged a point for the Stadion de Goffert outfit in a fierce derby encounter.
Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi played a key part in NEC Nijmegen 1-1 draw against Vitesse on Sunday and his impact has not gone unnoticed as fans went a step further to applaud his game.
Peter Hyballa’s men trailed Vitesse for the most part of the game after Navarone Foor gave the visitor the lead by converting Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s assist in 38th minute, forcing the tactician to make a double change in the second half.
Awoniyi who is currently on loan from Liverpool came on as a second half substitute for Jay-Roy Grot in the 46th minute and kept the defenders on their toes with a man of the match display.
The forward’s presence upfront finally paid off with a late equaliser by Dario Dumic in the 88th minute after being set up Andre Fomitschow.
Despite not getting his name on the score-sheet, a NEC Nijmegen fan appreciated the 19-year old forward for the difference he made in the game by pasting a note on his door.
“Met this after derby game… Thanks what a Neigbour they are… Speechless. NEC NIJMEGEN 1 vs VITESSE 1,” Awoniyi posted.
NEC Nijmegenare who are placed 12th in the Dutch Eredivisie league will visit FC Utrecht for next league game.
