Maikaba hails Akwa United management for Calabar trip approval

The ex-Wikki Tourists coach has thumbed up the decision of the Uyo side management for approving their Calabar trip

Akwa United head coach Abdu Maikaba has thumbed up the decision of the Promise Keepers’ management to approve their pre-season tour of Calabar where they arrived at on Sunday night to continue with the final phase of their build up to the Nigeria Professional Football League season.

Maikaba joined the Uyo side after opting not to renew his contract with Wikki Tourists despite leading the team to qualify for the Caf Confederation Cup and he has stressed that he is trying to build a new structure with Akwa United and has put everything that happened last season behind him.

Maikaba told Goal: “I considered my journey to Uyo as the start of another phase in my career and won’t like to comment on what I did with Wikki Tourists because they are now in the past. I am hoping to build a long lasting programme that will still continue to live even after I have left.

“It was a tough decision for me but I am here now and out of respect for my new employers I would like to talk about what is happening here alone. I want to say that I am happy with the way I have been received thus far and I want to thank the management of Akwa United for approving our trip to Calabar. We will make the best use of the trip.”

Maikaba will be under pressure to rejig the Akwa United side that finished the last league season in 14th position to be among the frontrunners this term with a view to picking a continental ticket at the end of the season.
