The Dutch international was a 2017 signing from Chelsea and has been attracting interest from other top-flight clubs in recent weeks, with Manchester United and Tottenham both strongly linked.

Now you can add Manchester City to those said to be keen which will only contribute to Bournemouth‘s problems when it comes to keeping him in the New Year, with reports claiming City are ready to offer £40m for his services, around double what the Cherries paid.

Eddie Howe has made it clear he does not want to lose the defender but concedes that if the bids go beyond a certain figure the decision may well be taken out of his hands.

Howe said of the speculation: “It’s inevitable [to be linked] when the team is doing well people will naturally highlight our players, potential players who can go on and play at a higher level.

“I look at it as a compliment to the team. It certainly won’t disrupt Nathan, knowing how level-headed he is.”
