Man City secure vital 2-0 Newcastle win to heap pressure on Arsenal

Manchester City have kept up the heat on Premier League leaders Arsenal after a 2-0 home win against Newcastle United.

The Gunners had extended their lead to five points with a game in hand earlier in the week, but City’s victory reduces the gap back to two points ahead of Arsenal’s game on Saturday.

Phil Foden continued his impressive form by scoring in the first half, although City needed a second goal from substitute Bernardo Silva to seal the win.

Newcastle, who are struggling in the league, were in the game but failed to take their chances and looked vulnerable at the back.

City could have taken an early lead when Ilkay Gundogan headed over from a Jack Grealish cross, but it was Foden who broke the deadlock after 15 minutes.

Foden evaded three Newcastle defenders before his shot was deflected in by Sven Botman.

Newcastle fought back and had a great chance to level the game, but Callum Wilson failed to connect with Kieran Trippier’s header.

City brought on Silva in the second half, who scored with a well-placed shot just inside the box, assisted by Erling Haaland.

City’s win was sealed with an excellent save from Newcastle’s Nick Pope to prevent Foden from scoring a second goal.

The victory puts pressure on Arsenal ahead of their match against Bournemouth.
