Man United’s David de Gea scoops Premier League Golden Glove award

David de Gea has secured the Premier League Golden Glove for the second time in his Manchester United career.

Despite the team’s mixed performances throughout the 2022/23 season, the defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, along with De Gea’s improved displays in goal, have contributed to the team’s solidity at the back, resulting in De Gea notching 16 clean sheets in the league.

De Gea’s 16th clean sheet was achieved in a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday, ensuring that no other goalkeeper can surpass his record in the Golden Glove race.

Although there is still a chance for Alisson Becker, Nick Pope, and Aaron Ramsdale to match De Gea’s achievement, they currently trail behind by three clean sheets, with three matches remaining in the season.

This is the second time that De Gea has claimed the Golden Glove during his tenure at Manchester United, having previously accomplished the feat in the 2017/18 season with 18 clean sheets.

Despite De Gea’s recent success, his future at Manchester United remains uncertain as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and negotiations for a new deal have yet to be finalized.

De Gea’s recent errors, particularly in defeats against Sevilla and West Ham, have raised questions among Manchester United fans regarding whether the club should offer him a new contract. These mistakes have been cause for concern.

Nevertheless, Manchester United manager Ten Hag has expressed unwavering support for De Gea, highlighting his importance to the team. Ten Hag stated, “He currently holds the record for the most clean sheets in the league, and our position wouldn’t be the same without him. I have complete faith in him, and I have no concerns. Mistakes happen, but as a team, we need to deal with them, show character, resilience, and bounce back. We want him to stay and extend his contract.”

Despite the doubts surrounding De Gea’s future, it appears that the Manchester United manager fully backs the goalkeeper and values his contributions to the team. The negotiations for a new contract will likely play a crucial role in determining De Gea’s future at the club.
