Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has been named the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year after playing a major role in the club’s return to the top end of the Premier League table this season.
Fernandes has scored eight goals and registered 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United during the 2025-26 campaign.
The Portugal midfielder becomes the first United player to win the award since Wayne Rooney claimed the honour in 2010.
His performances have helped United recover from a difficult period and move closer to securing a Champions League place under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Although the club is set to finish another season without silverware, United are on course to end the campaign in third place in the Premier League.

Fernandes joined Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020 in a deal worth £67.7 million and recently made his 300th appearance for the club.
The 31-year-old’s latest recognition comes after uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford last season.
Club officials had informed Fernandes they would not prevent him from leaving if he chose to accept an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
However, the midfielder rejected the move and also turned down interest from other European clubs to remain at Manchester United.
Fernandes currently has a contract running until 2027, with an option for an additional year.
His influence this season has increased discussions about a possible contract extension despite efforts by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to reduce the club’s wage bill.
Fernandes said last October that he would delay discussions about his future until after the upcoming World Cup.
Manchester United’s improvement in form has been closely linked to Fernandes’ performances, especially during the second half of the season.
Since returning from injury against Burnley, the midfielder has either scored or provided an assist in 13 of his last 16 matches in all competitions.
United’s push for a Champions League return, once considered unlikely earlier in the campaign, has largely been driven by Fernandes’ consistency in midfield.
His contribution throughout the season ultimately earned him recognition from football writers, making him one of the standout performers in English football this year.
