Maradona sits on pitchside throne

Diego Maradona made sure he was comfortable while watching Gimnasia beat Newell’s Old Boys 4-0 last night.

The legendary former forward is certainly considered a king by many in Argentina and channelled his royal status by sitting pitchside in a throne.

Maradona, who won the World Cup in 1986 and is generally regarded as one of the greatest to ever play the game, took over as manager of Gimnasia, based in the city of La Plata, near Buenos Aires, in September.

Gimnasia has not had the best of times in the Superliga, however, and had won just once in nine games coming into a tricky-looking away game against Newell’s on Tuesday evening.

It ended up being a comfortable victory for Maradona’s team, though, as three goals in six second-half minutes added to a first-half strike to seal a 4-0 win.

Rather than the football, however, much of the attention from the match was focused on Maradona, who had a spell as a player at Newell’s from 1993-1994 and made a speech to supporters prior to the game, who warmly applauded him and sang his name.

He then took a seat on the sidelines on what appeared to be a throne, while the rest of his staff and players sat in the more traditional dugout.

In addition to this, those who were not at the game were able to watch the 58-year-old through a special camera named ‘Diego Cam’ on TNT Sports.

Maradona certainly seems to be enjoying life at Gimnasia, and footage of him dancing following their first victory under his management recently went viral.

He also had a spell as manager of the Argentinean national side from 2008-2010, overseeing their World Cup finals campaign in South Africa, in which they made in to the quarter-finals before losing 4-0 to Germany.
