Messi can win 2022 World Cup ―Sampaoli

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi can still get his hands on the world cup trophy, former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli said on Wednesday.

Sampaoli, who coached Argentina during the World Cup 2018, said that Messi – who will be 35 during the World Cup 2022 – can still achieve his dream of the winning the tournament.

The Argentine coach was heavily criticised during world cup in Russia for the team’s failures. Argentina’s performance was below-par during the tournament. The team just about managed to qualify for the knockouts, while were knocked out in round-of-16 by France, who went on to become champions.

Jorge said Messi can win the world cup, but he added that the Argentina national team will have to make a few amendments. “For the next World Cup or Copa America you need organisation, unlimited confidence and knowing that everything requires a process.”

“Of course Messi can still win the world cup, but that would need a systematic organisation and study into how to correct the problems,” Sampaoli added. He added: “If you win the Copa America (2020), that’s awesome. But if you don’t, the system must not be broken, but built upon for the world cup and that’s how Argentina and Messi can win it.”

Messi has, however, turned all focus on the club side and has taken break from Argentina national team. Barcelona face table-toppers Sevilla in Spanish La Liga fixture on Saturday.
