Messi set to depart as PSG opt against contract renewal

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have decided against a contract extension for Lionel Messi according to French sports newspaper L’Équipe.

Messi’s recent unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia as the country’s tourism ambassador, causing him to miss PSG training, was the tipping point for the club’s management. As a result, the 35-year-old Argentine has been suspended for two weeks without pay, and will not play or train with the team during that time.

Although Messi’s initial contract with PSG included an option for a third season, the club has decided not to activate it. PSG’s management was already leaning towards not renewing Messi’s contract, and although the player’s inner circle had been insisting that the Ligue 1 champions were keen on re-signing him, there is now reportedly no ambiguity.

Messi will have three more games to play with PSG after serving his suspension before leaving the club at the end of next month.

This news comes after a disappointing season for PSG, who have already been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League and lost the top spot in Ligue 1 to Lille.
