Oliver Giroud has cheekily claimed that his scorpion kick goal against Crystal Palace was better than the one
scored against Sunderland.
The Manchester United star made headlines for his spectacular Boxing Day effort at Old Trafford, latching on to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s cross with a deft back heel to beat Jordan Pickford.
Mkhitaryan won goal of the month for December but Giroud will almost certainly be claiming that accolade for January after mirroring the effort less than a week later on New Year’s Day.
Asked by Soccer AM what his Arsenal team-mates made of his effort, Giroud said: ‘Actually, they were teasing me, saying that the Mkhitaryan one was better.
‘It’s crazy that two similar goals were scored in one week. I don’t know if I got inspired, it’s destiny.
‘He did very well as well, but I think mine is better. But to be serious it was funny in the dressing room, we were all surprised by what happened.’
The other Arsenal players may have been surprised by the unorthodox manner in which Giroud scored, but the sight of the France international putting the ball in the back of the net has been a common one in recent weeks.
