Modric set to extend stay at Real till 2020

Luka Modric has confirmed that he would like to stay with Real Madrid beyond the end of his current contract which expires in summer 2020.

The 33-year-old midfielder enjoyed an impressive 2018 having helped Croatia reach the final of the World Cup in Russia and claiming the Ballon d’Or ahead of usual suspects Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

However, with Modric’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu starting to ebb away and no new deal in place, he was being linked with a possible switch to Italian Serie A side Inter Milan.

That looked like a distinct possibility until Modric spoke out to reveal that he has no plans to depart the reigning European champions.

“I am calm about my future, there are still 18 months left on my deal,” Modric told Marca.

“My wish is to stay here for even longer than that, as the truth is I am very happy here, as much as I was on the first day I joined.”
