Morata is key ―Lampard

Frank Lampard knows a thing or two about playing Barcelona wearing Chelsea’s colours.

Back in 2005, the England legend scored a legendary goal at the Nou Camp as Chelsea went on to beat Barcelona 5-4 on aggregate to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.

13 years on and Chelsea are attempting to do the same, but they don’t have Lampard, John Terry or Didier Drogba this time around.

After drawing 1-1 with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie, they now travel to Catalonia knowing they have to score in order to progress.

With Conte preferring to play Eden Hazard as a false nine as opposed to the misfiring Alvaro Morata in the first leg, it appears as though the Italian has a plan.

However, Lampard believes Conte should play Morata and believes Fernando Torres’ performance in the Nou Camp for the Blues back in 2012 is a good indicator why.

“I would certainly consider picking Morata to lead the line with Eden Hazard and Willian behind,” Lampard said. “The striker has to play better than he has done in recent weeks. He needs to be physically stronger and hold the ball up more. He has the physical attributes and technical ability to do this.

“But what Morata can also provide is a target for Chelsea players to aim at and someone who can run in behind. He can do that job more naturally than Hazard, who without the responsibility of playing up front can get more involved in the game himself.

“What Fernando Torres did in 2012 shows what a recognised striker can give you against Barcelona. There is that opportunity to play balls over the top to get out.”

Everyone remembers Torres’ goal that sent Chelsea through in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona back in 2012 and they especially remember Gary Neville’s reaction to it.

Chelsea would go on to win the competition that year; could Morata spark a similar triumph?
