Morocco stuns world number one Brazil in friendly match

Morocco followed their impressive run to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Brazil in an international friendly in Tangiers.

Despite missing injured forwards Neymar and Richarlison, Brazil fielded an experimental side under interim boss Ramon Menezes and suffered a defeat at the Grand Stade de Tanger.

In the gritty opening minutes, Lucas Paquetz had an opportunity to put Brazil in the lead, but the Palmeiras winger fired over from close range.

Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui came close to scoring midway through the first half, while a series of goalkeeping errors from Bono nearly saw Brazil break the deadlock.

Morocco took the lead just before the half-hour mark, with Sofiane Boufal slotting past Weverton after receiving a cut-back from Bilal El Khannous.

Despite Bono’s fine save from a searing Rodrygo volley just after the break, Casemiro’s strike from 25 yards equalised for Brazil.

However, Morocco secured a famous win on home soil in the late stages of the contest, with Abdelhamid Sabiri’s half-volley cannoning into the roof of the net following Walid Cheddira’s knock-back from Yahia Attiyat Allah’s cross.
