Women’s football in Nigeria has grown from spirited local matches to a fully professional league that now commands national pride.

Among the many teams competing in the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership, a few clubs have distinguished themselves with sustained excellence, strong structures and regional representation.

In this article, Sporting Tribune spotlights the clubs that have raised the bar on and off the pitch.

Bayelsa Queens (Yenagoa) – “The Prosperity Girls”

Bayelsa Queens have established themselves as arguably the most decorated club in the NWFL Premiership era. In the 2024-25 season, they secured their sixth league title, confirming their status at the summit of Nigerian women’s club football.

Throughout that title win, they displayed dominance: remaining unbeaten through regular season play, and finishing top of the Super Six playoff table.

Rivers Angels (Port Harcourt) – The Standard-bearers

Rivers Angels are among the pioneers and consistently successful sides in Nigerian women’s football. They had won multiple league titles (in years 1994, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020-21) before being challenged by newer rivals.

In 2021, they clinched the NWFL Super Six Championship to qualify for continental competition.

Delta Queens (Asaba) – The Forgotten Giants

Delta Queens may not dominate headlines today but historically they have enjoyed significant success. They claimed league titles in 2003, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Their legacy is important for remembering that the women’s club game in Nigeria has depth and roots beyond the recent era of dominance.

Nasarawa Amazons (Lafia) – Northern Nigeria’s Pioneer

From the North-Central region, Nasarawa Amazons stand out. They secured league titles in 2013 and 2017. While they may not have the volume of titles of some Southern clubs, their presence is vital for the geographic spread of the women’s game.

Edo Queens (Benin City) – The New Champion

In 2024, the Benin-based club Edo Queens made history by winning the NWFL Premiership for the first time. They followed that up by representing Nigeria in the continental competition, signalling their arrival at the elite level.
