After a scintillating series against the Heat, the Denver Nuggets won their first NBA title ending their 47-year wait for the Championship trophy, triumphing over the Miami Heat 94-89 with a solid 28 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists from Nikola Jokic.
The Nuggets won the 7-game series NBA finals 4-1, bringing Mike High City to an uproar while delivering Heat’s third finals defeat in 10 seasons. Just two days after compatriot Novak Djokovic was crowned the Champion of the French Open for the 23rd time, Nikola Jokic was named the 2023 NBA Finals MVP.
The two time NBA Most Valuable Player delivered on a night when the team struggled, he showed his composure and consistency at a time when the team needed him the most.
“We’re not in it for ourselves, we’re in it for the guy next to us and that’s why this [means] even more,” Jokic said following victory at Ball Arena.
“It was amazing effort by the team, It was an ugly game. We couldn’t make shots. But at the end we figured it out, how to defend and we scored 90 points. That’s why we won. I’m just happy we won the game.” he explained
“It’s good. The job is done and we can go home now.”
Denver was the playoff top seed in the Western Conference while the Heat had to win a play-in game to reach the playoffs coming out victorious and creating upsets against giants Milwaukee, New York and Boston to advance to the NBA finals.
Denver trailed 71-70 at the start of the Fourth quarter and 89-88 with just under two minutes to play in the game. However, they refused to be denied victory at their home as they put up a strong performance to make an amazing comeback securing the NBA Championship title.
For Miami, Jimmy Butler scored 21 points while Bam Adebayo got 20 but they were unable to keep their hopes of an unlikely series comeback alive.
Only one of the 36 teams to have previously fallen 3-1 behind in an NBA Finals, the LeBron James’s Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 had managed to come back to win the championship.
Nuggets Head Coach Michael Malone said to the home fans after clinching the Championship trophy: I’ve got news for everyone out there. We are not satisfied with one, we want more.”
