As the 8th edition of the National Youth Games drew to a close, 12-year-old Mumyal Simon from Gombe State became the rave of the moment. The young Fulani girl won three gold medals for her state.
Little Mumyal Simon, the only athlete representing Gombe state, has her third appearance at the National Youth Games and won the medals in the gymnastics event on Monday.
Mumyal was disqualified for lack of proper registration at the last National Youth Games I Asaba.
Putting the last experience behind, little Mumyal said her priority is to represent the country at international events.
Speaking to Sporting Tribune, the mother of the athlete, Mrs Kwaragan-jada said it was a dream come true for the entire family, Gombe state and the entire northeast region of Nigeria.
“My little Fulani girl has really made us proud in Gombe, Northeast, and indeed the Fulani race,” the elated mother, a former football player, said.
“I must thank the Gombe state government who have always believed in my daughter’s ability, the management and staff of the Gombe state sports council, her coach and most especially, my husband for encouraging her.”
Also commenting, the Director of Sports Council, Hajaya Zainab Ishaku, in an interview, commended the little girl’s efforts and believed that she can win.
“This is her third time in this NYG, I also thank the parents who allowed her and encouraged her, her mother came all the way from Gombe to encourage her in Asaba.
“I have absolute confidence in her ability; that is why she was the only athlete Gombe state registered in this year’s National Youth Games.
“We are so proud of her, and I really want to thank my state government for giving me the chance to bring this girl to Asaba,” she said.
