President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday in Asaba, Delta state capital, said that the National Youth Games is to promote the spirit of friendship amongst states in the country.
President Tinubu stated this while declaring open the 7th edition of the NYG in Asaba.
Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, urged the officials and athletes to compete with the spirit of fairness and togetherness, while putting the interests of the nation ahead of their interest.
“Present here in Asaba, are boys and girls from far away states in the North, South, East and West.
“Let this game catalyze us to work together, compete together, stay together and be able to understand each other.
“Our hope is that this National Youth Games will assist Government and the people of Nigeria to foster peace and unity with one another”, he said
In his address, the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, described the NYG as a veritable tool for sports development through the grassroots.
He added that the competition is a powerful vehicle to discover new talents from the grassroots, just as he assured that the state government has put in programme for athletes’ succession in the country.
According to the governor, the NYG has proven to be a cost-effective and reliable tool in the promotion of national unity and advance development and peace agendas of both the national and sub-national governments.
