The president of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Engineer Emeka Onyeama says he is happy with the success recorded so far by the present board in taking the sport back to schools across the country.
Onyeama made this known in a telephone chat with Tribunesport.
“When we came on board, our focus was how to institutionalise cricket in Nigeria and popularise the game which has never been before.
“First of all, we reinstated cricket in the national school sports curriculum which has seen students participate in the last three editions under this administration.
“We also got cricket back into NUGA. No fewer than six universities have just completed at the NUGA cricket tournament at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi. That is another platform we are holding strongly after we rejuvenated the sport and it is now waxing stronger.
“Also at the second edition of the National Youth Games held in Ilorin in 2016, cricket [men and women] was the only team sport featured,” he said.
“In addition to popularising the game, we also, earlier this year, featured in international tournaments.
“Inasmuch as we have not gained promotion in international cadre, it does not mean that we are not doing anything to achieve greater results,” Onyeama said.
