The Branch Manager South West, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Boladale Odunlami has said the company would continue to develop grassroots sports in the country.
Odunlami disclosed this while speaking during the 20th Milo basketball Championship (Western Conference) at the indoor sports hall of the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.
“Milo secondary schools basketball championship has played a crucial role in grassroots sports development in Nigeria, and Nestle is committed to sustaining this development in the years to come.
“A good number of players in the Premier Basketball League in Nigeria have participated in Milo Secondary Schools basketball Championship at one point or the other. Some of our champions are also currently playing in other international Premier Basketball League in United State of America, Europe and elsewhere.
“We believe that children who are physically active in exercise and sports are less likely to be obese and most likely to do well all round.
“Milo uses sports as metaphor to teach school children important life skills such as determination, confidence, discipline, teamwork and respect.
“This year, 9,000 schools from 36 states and FCT are jostling for the pretigious trophy of champions. Today (Tuesday) we are yet again witnessing the final games of this Western Conference. The winners of this Western conference in both catgories will compete with other zonal representatives at the national finals billed to hold from May 3 to 10 in Lagos,” Odunlami stated.
Meanwhile, Wesley Girls Secondary School, Yaba Lagos State defeated Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan, Oyo State 36-35 in the female final, while International School, UNILAG, Lagos State beat Victorious Private Secondary School, Olokuta, Idi-Aba, Ogun State 77-41 in the male category.
The winners in both categories were presented with trophies and cash prizes for the development of sports facilities in their respective schools.
