Newcastle appoint Ross Wilson as sporting director

Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Ross Wilson as their new sporting director, following his departure from Nottingham Forest.

Wilson replaces Paul Mitchell, who left the club less than a year after taking over from Dan Ashworth.

During his time at Nottingham Forest, Wilson played a key role in the club’s transfer operations, overseeing several major signings, including Omari Hutchinson’s £37.5 million move from Ipswich, the club’s biggest-ever deal.

Before joining Forest, he served as sporting director at Rangers and director of football operations at Southampton.

Speaking on his appointment, Wilson said, “Newcastle is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters.

“I’ve been in regular contact with Eddie Howe, and the trust and alignment we’re building already feels strong. We believe that being united as a team will be crucial as we move the club forward together.”

Manager Eddie Howe, who has previously spoken about the importance of stability in the club’s structure, welcomed Wilson’s arrival.

“A sporting director helps protect the manager from a lot of things,” Howe once said, acknowledging the value of strong collaboration in football operations.

Wilson’s task will be to shape Newcastle’s medium- and long-term strategy after a period of boardroom changes.
