Nigeria reject AWCON hosting rights

Nigeria will not be making a bid to replace Ghana as hosts of the Africa Women Cup of Nations if CAF withdraws the rights from the West African nation.

Reports out of Ghana early this week speculated that the continental ruling body had withdrawn the rights from Ghana as a result of an inability to complete facilities on schedule, though that has since been debunked.

On Tuesday, CAF issued a statement saying the decision would only be made at the CAF Executive Committee meeting on 28 September in Egypt.

Kenya were reported to be among the favourites if CAF shopped for alternate venues, but FKF president Nick Mwendwa quickly made it clear the country would not be putting their hand up.

Top NFF sources told KweséESPN that Nigeria would not be available to take up the rights either, should Ghana be removed as host.

“Our political system is too heated right now for that,” a high-ranking NFF official said, referring to both the crisis within the football federation, and upcoming general elections in 2019.

The tournament is scheduled to run from November 17 to December 1. Nigeria are the defending champions and the top three teams qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
