Nigeria starts AFCON 2023 on shaky note

Super Eagles of Nigeria got off their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) group A match on a shaky note after played a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium on Sunday.

The result was a set back for the Eagles as one of the tournament favorites.

The three-time champions, Nigeria dominate the possession and calmly set about creating chances but failed to utilised it.


Equatorial Guinea star, Ivan Salvador open the scoring in the 36th minute of the match but Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen equalised for the Eagles in the 38th minute to make it 1-1.

Osimhen wasted a lot of scoring chances in both half of the game which would have change the game positively.

New Super Eagles invitee, Alhassan Abdullahi was substituted after injured in the 72nd minute of the game.

Nigeria will face the host country, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the second group A match of the campaign on Thursday while Guinea-Bissau will engage Equatorial Guinea on the same day.
Equatorial Guinea Captain, Jesus Lazaro got the Man of the Match award.
