Nigeria are considering a change to both the date and venue for their 2019 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon, originally scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo in August.
Top NFF sources informed KweseESPN that the match could now be played on 1 September, rather than the initial scheduled date of 28 August.
One reason, according to multiple sources within the NFF, is to allow coach Gernot Rohr a little more training time with his squad.
With the change in date also comes a change in venue, with Uyo on the verge of being discarded.
Officials say the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt is top on the list of replacement venues, with the National Stadium Abuja as a fallback option.
The pitch in Abuja has fallen into disrepair, but repair work is already going on with Lansard Ltd doing clean-up while waiting for major rejuvenation for the now patchwork grass.
Meanwhile, following Kelechi Iheanacho’s poor performance in the 2-0 home defeat to South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last weekend, Super Eagles coaches are now on the lookout for a new man to lead their attack, it has been revealed.
“Iheanacho has been the leading scorer of the team, but most of his goals have not been in open play but penalties,” one of the officials told SCORENigeria.
“He has not often been played as top striker even at his club and with the physicality of the African game, he can only struggle in that position for the Eagles.
“You will get his best when he plays behind the top striker.
“And that’s why we have to now get a real top 9,” he added
Odion Ighalo, Victor Osimhen and Olanrewaju Kayode could now be considered to lead the Eagles strike force going forward.
