The Akwa State Ibom Police Command has assured fans and visitors of adequate security when Nigeria face Cameroon in a 2018 World Cup qualifier today at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Muazu Zubairu, has deployed a strong 700-man special squad to forestall any ugly incident.
The CP, who announced this on Wednesday, said the police were working with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free match and warned fanatical supporters to imbibe high sense of decorum during and after the match.
“We are determined to ensure that soccer-loving Nigerians enjoy the football match under a peaceful atmosphere devoid of any infractions of law and have directed the deployment of over 700 specially selected officers knowledgeable in crowd control and policing events to provide top notch security before, during and after the match”, he said.
He added that the police, working with other security agencies, have stepped up crime reduction strategies in anticipation of increased crime rates usually experienced with the influx of people within Nigeria and abroad under the pretext of coming for such a big game.
“The Command will not hesitate to deal decisively with miscreants and hooligans who may want to take undue advantage of the peace and security in the state to foment trouble during the match,” he warned.
