Nigeria’s Samuel Ogbondeminu has been elected as the vice Chairperson of the Technical Committee for the African Games (TCAG) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Also elected are Sid Ahmed Selmi (Algeria) as Chairperson while Dr Penina Kabenge Aligawesa (Uganda) emerged as Rapporteur. The election is in accordance with Article 18 (3) of the Statute of the African Union Sports Council on the election of the Bureau.
The new Bureau’s mandate started on 20th November, 2024 and they shall be in office for a period of two years. The TCAG is given the mandate to propose an objective criterion for evaluating the bidding files for the host countries and overseeing the management and organization of the Games by the Local Organizing Committee, amongst other duties.
The TCAG members, during the induction workshop, were acquainted with the legal frameworks governing the African Games and recommended reviews of some of the Games’ governing instruments.
The African Games were established for the purposes of promoting high performance in African sports and enhancing sporting and cultural exchanges between African Union member states.
The Games are a multi-disciplinary sport competition established under the ownership and patronage of the African Union. The Games are also an exclusive property of the African Union that holds all rights relating to their organization, exploitation, broadcast and reproduction by any means whatsoever.
Organised once every four years and one year before the Olympic Games, the Games are organised in line with the rules and regulations adopted by the African Union Specialized Technical Committee for Youth, Culture and Sports (STC-YCS).
