‎NIS charges students on standards, excellence

The Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has charged coaches currently wrapping up their basic certificate course against cutting corners to achieve success.

Shaibu made the charge during an interaction with the students at the Abuja campus of the Institute inside the Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja

‎While commending the coaches for the good conduct they have exhibited so far, the DG urged the coaches not to be in a hurry to conclude their program due to the festivity ahead, saying the calendar will be followed thoroughly.

‎Shaibu said, “I know we are setting new standards and the standard is our processes. We must make sure that the academic calendar and programmes are followed the way it is approved. When you try to cut any corners, it reduces the potency of your certificate. And for us, the new NIS will not cut any corners. That is the only way our certificate will be worthwhile, and it will be recognised anywhere in the world.

“No matter the inconveniences, it is better we are inconvenienced and the product of our sacrifice is worthwhile, and I’m sure none of you want to see all the time you have spent here is wasted. Remember that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mean well for sports, and here we are aligned with his Renewed Hope Agenda in using sports to engage our youths.”

The DG, however, commended the outgoing students as the Institute’s ambassadors, noting that they will be needed in future to train and model upcoming coaches and be trusted to take up jobs even outside the shores of Nigeria.

‎”We need you to be good ambassadors, as you are also going to be used to train others. So we cannot give you half-baked education and rely on you to come and teach others. That is why we are insisting that our standard must be adhered to,” he added.

‎Sporting Tribune reports that the 2025 basic coaching course will end on Thursday, 18th, December 2025 with the presentation of certificates to the participants.
