‘Not an easy transition’, Mixed reactions on social media as Paul Onuachu joins Southampton

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu made a surprise deadline-day move to Premier League side Southampton for a reported fee 18.6m pounds.

Onuachu had earlier been linked to relegation-threatened Everton, but the Saints swooped in on deadline day to get their man who is until his departure led the Belgian Pro-League’s scoring charts with 14 goals in the 2022/23 season.

Onuachu has developed a reputation as a reliable goalscorer in Denmark and Belgium where he featured prolifically for FC Midtjylland (54 goals in 134 apps) and KRC Genk (74 goals in 114 apps).

Following his goal-scoring prowess, some social media users expressed surprise at his choice of Southampton who are currently struggling for form. Questioning if Onuachu can make his mark in a more difficult league.

Some others expressed excitement, wishing him success and hoping he continues his impressive goalscoring in the Premier League.

Here are some reactions gathered by Sporting Tribune

@ColinUdoh This Southampton move is an all-to-prove one for Paul Onuachu. Conquered Denmark and Belgium, but still doesn’t get much respect, esp after his struggles at international level. He makes a success of this, there’ll be no doubting him any more #Goodluck

@oluwashina Saint Paul. #Nigeria striker Paul Onuachu has landed in the premier league with struggling Southampton.

@munashalom This January transfer window  Paul Ọnụachụ should have waited till the summer He just left a league medal and golden boot to come join Southampton You could have waited till summer transfer window I’m pissed

@zipa___ Lol, Onuachu. Top scorer in the Belgian league with the top team in the Belgian league joining struggling Southhampton? I don’t even know if that’s an upgrade tbh.

@Omojuwa Southampton signed Paul Onuachu to save them from relegation. I hope he gets all the goals he needs.

@PoojaMedia Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu has completed his deal to Southampton from Genk for €18m on a 3-year deal.  Aribo will welcome him.

@YemiTM442 Happy for Paul Onuachu; Southampton need a goal scorer. if he gets like 10 goals in the Premier League and probably succeeds in keeping The Saints up; it would be fantastic.

@TheOddSolace Southampton really pushing the boat out with Sulemana and Onuachu signings. One all upside, the other with a point to prove. Have to say it’s come as a surprise to me, but I’m keen to see whether Onuachu‘s goalscoring will transfer to a higher level. Not an easy transition.

@muyiwhar So happy about this deal…. Really hope Onuachu bangs in the premier league.
