NPFL: Intriguing weeks ahead as season inches near end

With Matchday 31 now behind us and Matchday 32 on the cards this weekend, the 2025/2026 season of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has surged into a high-stakes finale, where the line between glory and failure is becoming increasingly thin.

From the title race to the scramble for continental tickets and the dogfight for survival, the closing fixtures promise tension, drama, and defining outcomes.

League leaders Enugu Rangers, sitting on 54 points, remain in pole position, but are far from comfortable. Their upcoming clash with perennial rivals, Shooting Stars in Ibadan, this weekend already shapes into a potential title decider.

Anything short of victory could expose Rangers’ vulnerability, throw the race open and reduce their chances of carting home the diadem.

Breathing down their neck are Rivers United, arguably the most consistent and composed side in the run-in until recently, when they flopped, no thanks to back-to-back defeats in their outstanding fixtures.

This weekend, they are up against struggling Kun Khalifat, a tie they should claim to keep their dream alive.

Third-placed Ikorodu City have been the surprise package of the season. Fortunately, the positive results they secured in their clash away to Warri Wolves relaunched them back to contention for either the league crown or continental slot.

The race for continental qualification remains tightly packed. Shooting Stars, Abia Warriors and Bendel Insurance are separated by the slimmest of margins. Shooting Stars, in particular, hold a crucial advantage with their direct encounter against Rangers. A positive result would not only boost their continental ambition but also reshape the title race.

Abia Warriors face a stern test away to Enyimba in what could define their season. A strong result in this Abia derby would confirm their credentials as genuine contenders for a top-three finish, while defeat could derail their push.

Benin Arsenal and Bendel Insurance, on their part, must capitalise on fixtures such as their tie against Plateau United to remain firmly in contention.

At the bottom end, the relegation battle has taken an even more desperate turn. Kwara United and Kun Khalifat occupy the drop zone and are running out of lifelines. Kwara United’s encounter with Nasarawa United presents a daunting challenge, while Kun Khalifat face an uphill task against the wounded Rivers United.

Remo Stars have given themselves a fighting chance, following a crucial victory over Kwara United last Sunday, but their away trip to Elkanemi Warriors remains a potential stumbling block. Similarly, Bayelsa United will battle for survival against Kano Pillars in a high-pressure encounter, with both sides still looking over their shoulders.

The clash between Niger Tornadoes and Wikki Tourists stands out as a classic relegation six-pointer, where the outcome could significantly alter the survival equation.

Even mid-table teams like Warri Wolves and Barau FC are not entirely safe, underlining the fierce competitiveness that has defined this NPFL season.

As the curtain gradually falls on the campaign, the pressure has become suffocating.

Every point, every goal, and every decision now carries enormous consequences.

In the coming days, contenders will be separated from pretenders, with the champion, continental slots winners rejoicing, leaving relegated teams with heartbreak.
