Inter Lagos have been hit with a series of disciplinary sanctions following the incidents that marred their Matchday seven encounter against Katsina United.
The Lagos-based club were sanctioned after match officials were allegedly assaulted and held hostage for more than an hour following the controversial fixture.
As part of the punishment, Inter Lagos have been fined N5.25 million and handed a three-point and three-goal deduction.
The sanctions are a major setback for Inter Lagos, who have been making efforts to establish themselves in the topflight following their promotion from the lower cadre.
The disciplinary action is expected to have a significant impact on the club’s position on the league table, with the three-point deduction potentially affecting their push for a strong campaign.
The alleged assault and detention of match officials for over an hour has also raised fresh concerns about the safety and security of match officials during NPFL fixtures.
Football authorities have continued to emphasise the need for clubs, players, officials and supporters to respect the laws of the game and ensure that matches are conducted in a safe environment.
Inter Lagos will now have to decide whether to accept the punishment or challenge the disciplinary committee’s decision within the stipulated period.
The development adds another chapter to what has been a highly eventful NPFL season, with the league authorities sending a strong message that incidents involving match officials will not be treated lightly.
