The National Sports Commission (NSC) has promised logistics support for the successful hosting of the African Women’s Volleyball inter-club championship to be held in Abuja from 1st April to 14th, 2025.
NSC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, gave the assurance when he received the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, in his office at the package A of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Monday.
Dikko, who commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its contributions to Nigerian sports from time immemorial, said the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed, will provide all the support to make sure that the African Championship which the NCS is hosting is successful and expose the rich culture of Nigeria to the world.
“We will make sure that the Customs team get all the necessary support from the government. It is one of the agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to see Nigeria hosting as many competitions as possible. This will help in developing the athletes and in maintaining infrastructure,” Dikko said.
The Customs boss, in his earlier remarks, said the NCS team is hosting to win and will leave no stone unturned to prepare very well for the competition. He added that the NCS is working hand in hand with the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) to have a hitch-free tournament.
“In the Customs Service, sports is not an alternative business because it is what we do every day. Our officers must possess the attributes of a good athlete before they can succeed. After so much effort, Nigeria has been given the opportunity to host the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Cub Competition from 1st to 14th April 2025.
“This will be organised in conjunction with the Nigeria Volleyball Federation. Nigeria competed with Egypt, Tanzania and others before we were given the nod to host. With the preparations the women will have ahead of the competition, I want to assure you that they will not disappoint Nigerians as we aim at hosting to win.
“We, however, seek the support of the National Sports Commission in any way they can so as to make the dream of winning the tournament a reality. On our part, we will donate buses to the Commission to be distributed for some of the Sports Federations to convey the national teams,” the CGC said.
The Customs team qualified for the Championship after emerging as the champions of the 2024 Women’s Nigeria Volleyball League.
