The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of youth and school sports.
The Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said the Commission believes in the power of school sports to bring on board future champions who not only will take over from the current and ageing ones but also will bring honours to Nigeria at international meets.
Olopade stated this as the Nigerian delegation of 32 student-athletes and 10 officials, to be represented by the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), is set to participate at the 2025 FISU World University Games scheduled to take place in Germany from July 16 to 21, 2025.
Olopade said, “Our support for NUGA at the World University Games is a reflection of our belief in the power of school sports at all levels to shape future champions. These young athletes carry the dreams of a nation, and we are proud to stand behind them.”
NUGA President, Professor Bawa Mohammed, in his remarks, while commending the leadership of the NSC, highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s presence at the Games.
He said, “University sports is the bedrock of national talent development. We thank the National Sports Commission for their support in ensuring our students are not left out of this global competition. This is a vital platform to expose them to international standards and inspire excellence.”
Nigeria will compete in five sports, namely: athletics, badminton, table tennis, judo and taekwondo.
“This year’s Games mark another opportunity for Nigeria’s vibrant student-athletes to showcase their talent on a global stage, with the NSC providing critical financial and logistical support in partnership with the Nigeria University Games Association,” a statement by Kola Daniel, the SA media to the NSC DG, read.
