NUGA shops for N350m for 2018 Games

Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) and Pace Sports Entertainment Marketing are shopping for the sum of three hundred and fifty million naira ahead of the forthcoming higher institution football league scheduled to commence in July.

The football league which will through July 28 to August 27 will involve 79 registered Universities with 30 games and run for 14 weeks among 16 teams after the preliminary stages.

Shaibu Gara Gombe, Chief Executive Officer, Green White Green Sport Limited, the technical partner to NUGA and PaceSports Entertainment Marketing on the project disclosed this to Tribunesport after the signing of memorandum of understanding between the parties Tuesday held in Lagos adding that the project is private business oriented knowing fully well that government alone cannot sponsor sports but can only provide enabling environment for corporate bodies to operate.

Gombe who lamented the death of school sports among universities said that the project will help resuscitate sport development among students urging all major stakeholders to rally round the project to make it a success.

Speaking at the event, Sola Fijabi, Director, Pace Sports Entertainment Marketing having commended NUGA executives, Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and the Nigeria Football Federation for believing in the project said the competition which will be annual event was aimed at showcasing campus sporting talents and stimulate healthy rivalry among universities.

He further disclosed that the competition will be in two group of Atlantic and Savanah conferences respectively will be used to engage the youths and also to identify talent for the country.

NUGA president, Professor Stephen Hamapyel who also informed that the association welcomed the idea because it was in line with its policy said he hope it will used to showcase the country to the world as the winner of the competition will represent the country at the forthcoming World University Games next year January and also to expose the students to greater heights of their careerer.

The final of the competition is expected to hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
