NWPL: Imo govt set to overhaul Heartland Queens team, management

The Commissioner for Sports Development in Imo State, Hon. Evarestus Onyeocha, has disclosed the government’s plan to overhaul the Heartland Queens football team and its management with the aim of fortifying the team ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL) competition.

Onyeocha disclosed this to members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Imo chapter during an interface in his office on Tuesday.

He said that the government has plans to drop some of the players and members of the management who are not performing and replace them with serious-minded players.

Onyeocha further disclosed government arrangements to bring in more players into the club that will add value and reshape the club for future competitions

The Commissioner said that the Heartland Queens, as well as its feeder team, will soon resume their training in preparation for the upcoming league.

He assured that by the time the team begins their training, they will have capable hands to turn around the club.

On the just-concluded Niger Delta Development Commission Sports (NDDC) Festival, the Commissioner commended Imo athletes for bringing back laurels to the state

He said that state won 6 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 24 bronze medals.

Onyeocha also commended Imo athletes at the National Sports Festival (NSF) held at Edo State for bringing 38 medals to the state.

He extended his words of appreciation to the members of SWAN for their support and positive reportage during and after the event.

The Commissioner hinted that preparation is under way for the National Youth Games scheduled for 25th August 2025 at Asaba Delta State

He assured that Imo athletes will perform better than in the past by coming back with good results.

Onyeocha thanked Governor Hope Uzodinma for his assistance to the sports ministry in the state to ensure development.
