Despite the Nigerians’ goal scoring heroics, their teams were on the losing end in the European club football competition
Kayode Olarenwaju was on target for Austria Wien in their 4-2 defeat to AS Roma at the Franz Horr Stadium, Vienna on Thursday evening.
The Nigerian’s second minute strike put the Violets ahead before the Italians woke from their slumber to pick a win courtesy of Edin Dzeko’s brace and strikes from Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan.
The defeat place Austria Wien second in Group E with five points, three off leaders AS Roma.
It was a similar experience for Wilfred Ndidi as Genk fell 5-3 to Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés.
Ndidi’s 50th minutes’ strike could not prevent his side from crumbling to the more organised hosts whose goals were scored by Aritz Aduriz.
Even at the defeat, Genk lead Group F with six points from four games, and they host Rapid Wien in their next game.
