I adore Mikel ―Onyekuru

Henry Onyekuru is savouring the prospect of playing side by side with one of his football idols as Nigeria face Argentina in an international friendly today.

Onyekuru, 20, admits that Mikel Obi is one footballer who has been his source of inspiration to him and others while he was growing up.

The youngster played his first competitive match for Nigeria against Algeria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday, with the Super Eagles captain Obi left on the bench.

But with the likelihood of both players featuring against Argentina at Krasnodar today, Onyekuru, on loan to Anderlecht from Everton, is already reveling in a dream come true.

During the Super Eagles training at Krasnodar ahead of today’s game, the striker took a photograph with Obi, posted it on his Twitter handle with a message.

“I remember watching this guy play, winning premier league titles and being a huge inspiration for me and many other kids, Now we are teammates! God is Great! #ObiMikel#respect,” Onyekuru posted on his Twitter handle, @henryconyekuru, on Monday.

Onyekuru saw 20 minutes of action against the Algerian national team in Constantine on Friday, coming off the bench in the 70th minute to replace Anthony Nwakaeme, who made his debut on the night.
