The Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Abayomi Oke, has commended the authorities of Ona Ara Local Government Area and Ilaji Stadium and Resort Centre, Akanran, for complementing the efforts of the state government in the area of youths and sport development.
Mr Oke gave the commendation when he inspected facilities for the proposed Ona Ara Sport Festival, a partnership between Ona Ara Local Government Area and the chairman of Ilaji Stadium and Resort Centre, Mr Dotun Sanusi, scheduled for March 2018.
The event is expected to feature basketball, handball, volleyball, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, football, athletics and ayo olopon .
The commissioner, who was conducted round the facilities at the venue of the event, Ilaji Stadium and Resort Centre in Akanran, by the project coordinator, Mr Babatunde Olaniyi, described the decision of a private individual to take on a project of such magnitude as commendable and expressed the readiness of the state government to support the initiative.
“It is a long-term investment, a long-term thinking. One should use this opportunity to implore other private investors to take a cue. The state government is willing to go into partnership with them. You can see the active role the local government is playing regarding what is going on here.
The chairman of the caretaker committee of Ona Ara Local Government Area, Mr Aderemi Ogundele, who hosted the commissioner, expressed excitement about the project which he said had been designed to engage the minds of secondary school students in the area and discover sport talents among them.
Mr Ogundele described the visit of the commissioner as a measure of the support of the state government for the games and said the local government was prepared to host the event that he described as first of its kind in the state.
