Oyo govt approves N110m for Falconets ahead of World Cup qualifier

The Oyo State Government has approved the sum of N110 million for the camping and hosting of Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s national football team, Falconets ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda.

Commissioner for Works and Public Transport, Mojeed Mogbonjubola, during a media briefing following the State Executive Council meeting (EXCO) held on Tuesday at the Governor’s Office.

According to Mogbonjubola, the fund is part of the state’s broader effort to support sports development and promote youth engagement, while also showcasing Ibadan as a capable host city for international sporting events.

“The Council has approved N110 million to facilitate the camping and hosting arrangements for the U-20 Female National Team here in Ibadan. This move is in preparation for their upcoming Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda,” he stated.

The Commissioner emphasised that the state sees this as more than just a sports event but an opportunity to boost tourism, hospitality, and the local economy, as well as reinforce Oyo’s position as a centre for national and international engagements.

The upcoming match between Nigeria and Rwanda is expected to draw football fans, officials, and stakeholders to Ibadan, creating increased economic activity in the city.

The funding is expected to cover accommodation, feeding of players and officials, also inclusive are access to training facilities, security, logistics, and medical support as well as operational costs.

The initiative aligns with the administration’s broader youth and sports development strategy, which aims to provide platforms for young talents to thrive while also positioning Oyo State as a hub for major sporting events.
